Lodovico Pogliaghi House Museum: between art and memory

Nestled in the setting of Sacro Monte di Varese, at the end of Viale delle Cappelle, the Lodovico Pogliaghi House Museum is a unique place where art, history and private life intertwine. Fascinated by the beauty and spirituality of Sacro Monte, Milanese artist Lodovico Pogliaghi (1857-1950) chose to build his villa here in 1885, transforming it into a creative workshop and a refined personal museum.

The residence houses an extraordinary collection that reflects the eclecticism and multiple passions of its owner: Egyptian, Etruscan and Greco-Roman archaeological finds, paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance to the Baroque period, antique European and Asian textiles, historical furnishings and curiosities from all over the world. Alongside these works, the museum preserves Pogliaghi's sketches, drawings and working materials, including a plaster model of the main door of Milan Cathedral.

Today, the House Museum, owned by the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana, houses over 1,500 works and around 580 archaeological finds. The absence of captions and the decision to offer guided tours included in the ticket price reflect the desire to preserve the authenticity of the villa, giving visitors the intimate and domestic atmosphere that Pogliaghi himself had imagined for his home-museum.
